Australian man dies after being hit by a boat propeller in Jakarta

An Australian man has died after being hit by a boat propeller when he jumped into the sea to save the life of a female crew member who fell off a ferry.

Gregory Robert Jones, 41, from Camperdown, Sydney, suffered serious injuries when he was hit in the stomach by the blades and he was rushed to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The company director had dived off the Tidung Express vessel as it docked at Pelangi Island, off the coast of Jakarta, Standar Pos to try to help Cecelia Sulaiman, 20, who is still missing, according to reports. 

A spokesman for the Thousand Islands police said another crew member, Hendi, jumped into the water just before Mr Jones, who was the director of Jakarta-based company PT Unelec Indonesia.

‘Upon seeing the two people in the water, the victim (Mr Jones) attempted to help the victim who was in the water but he was hit by the boat propeller in his stomach and he died,’ Mr Ferry, the police spokesman told the .

He said the boat had sailed from Macan Island and was headed for Pelangi Island when Cecelia fell into the sea in rough conditions and high winds on Sunday.

Police are still searching for Cecelia, but she is feared drowned.

Thousand Islands police chief, John Weynart Hutagalung told : ‘The victim was taken to hospital Thousand Islands, but was already dead ahead. While Cecelia is still missing.’ 

A chain of more than 110 islands to the north of Jakarta’s coast, which are known for their beautiful beaches, make up the Thousand Islands. 

Mr Jones’ company, PT Unelec Indonesia, manufactures distribution, power and traction transformers.
